Factory vs Job Site Finishes. You don't "prime" wood for staining - only for painting. lol  We are officially at week 4 of the One Room Challenge and this was my biggest challenge for this project.  (see weeks 1, 2, 3)  Painting all of my kitchen cabinets Antoinette (pink) using Annie Sloan’s Chalk paint! Lookin so good! Maple doesn't absorb stain well. If you are trying to match the finish, then spraying would be the way to go. In the shot below you can see the slight color difference between the top and bottom cabinets.  This is because the bottom is just the coats of paint with no laquer.  The laquer slightly darkens the paint color as you can see in the uppers. As I've replaced trim and built-in storage in my house, I have taken advantage of yellow tints - or even orange ones (amber shellac) - to match the original aged wood. Apply at least three coats. Do not seal until you got ALL stained correctly. I hope I didn't discourage you. Usually the only way to fix a bad stain job is to sand it all down & hope the stain did not get absorbed too deep into wood & start over. Thank you Susie! Pick a contrasting finish and do that. **Also make sure to clean the nozzle of your sprayer regularly with the brush as buildup occurs from the paint and can cause splotches. If you are careful and make sure to use the pulls and knobs (especially during the first month or two) then this paint job will last as long as any factory finish.
